About the artist:
|
|
| |
O ne of the pioneers in the small Israeli Jazz scene. Born in New
Jersey (1939) to half eastern European half Syrian family, young
Jerry was exposed to many different musical cultures He first
came to Israel in 1963 at the age of 24, leaving behind a
promising musical career in New York where he played percussion
and Trombone with Lionel Hampton's big band orchestra, Charlie
Mingus, Sonny Clark and many others.
After he toured France - where he played with Chet Baker - Jerry
finally found his way to Israel where he collaborated with many
major musicians such as: Arik Einstein, Yafa Yarkoni & Arik
Lavie. In the late 60's he played with Mel Keller's group and
later on he joined "Jazz Workshop" which was the first band in
Israel to combine Mediterranean music, Jewish music and Jazz.
After they disbanded in 76' he organized his own band called
Shaa'tnez and played as a drummer with the Piamenta
brothers. During this whole period he kept on composing his own
music, influenced by his multicultural background and his life
in Israel. |

About
the album: |
|
| |
In 1980 Jerry decided to record and
produce a concept album under the name: "On the Road to
Jerusalem". He invited 12 of the leading musicians in Israel to
join him in Kibbutz Haogen studios, and together they
recorded the album in one single take. The result is a unique
mixture of Middle Eastern compositions, African and Afro-Cuban
music, and psychedelic Free Jazz. Jerry put out 500 copies of
the LP which he gave away to family and friends. None of them
were commercially distributed. 25 years later, this beautiful
piece of Israeli culture finally receives the respect it
deserves.
Digitally re-mastered from the
original tapes.
Album liner notes by
award winning musician, teacher and critic Yossi Mar-Haim |
